Sao Tome and Principe is an island country in the southeastern Gulf of Guinea on the west-central side of Africa, 201 kilometers away from the African continent. It consists of Sao Tome, Principe, and 14 small islands such as Rolas and Carrosso. It covers an area of about 1,001 square kilometers and has a population of about 204,000.
The economy of Sao Tome and Principe is mainly based on agriculture. The main cash crops are cocoa, coconut, coffee, palm kernels, etc., of which the output value of cocoa accounts for more than 20% of the GDP. It currently exports 3,500-4,000 tons of cocoa each year, accounting for more than 77% of the total exports. The proven reserves of oil are estimated to be 6-10 billion barrels, and it is still in the initial stage of development. It is rich in forest resources. The unique geographical location and beautiful natural landscape provide Sao Tome with rich tourism resources.
China and Sao Tome and Principe resumed diplomatic relations in 2016. The trade volume between China and Sao Tome and Principe in 2018 was US$7.3 million.
